PULSE

Strangely enough, just the other day I was wondering if Kristen Bell was in any 2006 movies. Now I know the answer. "Pulse", the second horror movie with a hottie I have heard about in as many days. Here is the plot synopsis (taken from blackfilms)

Synopsis: Based on the Japanese horror movie "Kairo," "Pulse" centers on a group of college students who discover that a computer hacker friend of theirs unwittingly pirated a strange wireless signal that opened a doorway for a terrifying evil to cross over into the world. As it spreads, everyone in its path is consumed, and the students must race to find a way to stop it.

Is it just me or do the Japanese only make horror movies about scary objects. Dont Japenese filmmakers know what a scary monster is? Ghost and Demons are freaky but I want my ZOMBIES. Blackfilms also has the trailer up, so check that out

When A Stranger Calls

A remake of the 70s horror film "When A Stranger Calls" has been made. I never saw the original but it looks to me like this is based on the urban legend about the babysitter who gets a call that the police trace to..... the HOUSE SHE IS IN!!! Sorry if I spoiled the story there, but the trailer also spoils it. The villain in the trailer is also comedic because he uses jazz hands several times in the trailer. The films star Camilla Belle appears to have starred in a bunch of movies I have never heard of (her imdb page) (notice that she was once on "Walker Texas Ranger"

Special note: Here is snopes.coms version of the legend mentioned above, and it says that "when a stranger calls" is based on this legend. Urban Legends Ahoy

ONLINE FILM FESTIVALS

Not much movie news to report today, so I thought I would link to one of my favorite sites about film, FilmFights! This film festival has a theme for everyone of its contest such as "make a musical with three songs that is under ten minutes long" Some of the contest are really specific, some are incredibly general. As the main page states "you have got something to prove" many of the filmmakers on the site battle in every single one of the contest for the win. I check back quite often because sometimes they get some great stuff. Anyway, if your bored, check it out! FilmFights!

Entertainment Weeklys Year end poll

The poll on entertainmentweekly.com concerning audiences oppinion on books, music, and most importantly, films. Concedering that this is an audience based poll, not a critics poll the films in the running were not highbrow(The Wedding Crashers got 5th) but they sure were entertaining. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire SMASHED the competition in both the new book and new movie categorys, with Batman Begins coming in second in the movie category. The only thing that was especially surprising is that Fiona Apples "Extraodinary Machines" won best new cd. I have only heard the title track from that cd and I must say it was alright, but considering that this is an audienc poll, it is really rather shocking to see this beat out a more popular album like "Late Registration" by Kanye West.

WATCHMEN

IGN FilmForce has an article about the adaptation of the comic book "Watchmen" to film. Apparently considered dead in the water all summer after it was shelved from production just weeks before filming began, Warner Brothers Pictures has now picked up the script. IGN's explanantion is that "V For Vendetta" has been getting great reviews and Warner Brothers wants to have "Watchmen" on hand in case "V for Vendetta" is a smash hit. "Vendetta" and "Watchmen" are two comics books by Allen Moore and "Watchmen" is another film in the gritty style that Warners has been using on its comic book adaptations. Personally, I have not read this comic book yet so I am not super pumped for it. Check out FilmForces original article

GHOST RIDER!

A official site for "Ghost Rider" is up and running and it has a ten second clip from the film. All I can say is WOW! This was cheesier than I expected, and yet still cool. The head looks really CGI-ed on and I know that while many films have bad special effects in the trailer, if the whole film looks like that, its going to be really distracting. Take a peek

NightWatch

Hey I just heard from a friend who had seen a german bootleg (in german bootleg is "rauptkopy") of Nightwatch. He said it was kicking rad and one of the best german films he had ever seen. While Fox Searchlight who has picked up the film for North American distrubution has no definite plans to release this film soon, the site is still amazing! The visuals are insane in the trailer and I can't wait to see it. Here is the official site
Official Site
Oh and here is the description of the movie from the official site:
For as long as humanity has existed, there have been "Others" among us; Witches, Vampires and Shape-Shifters who are soldiers in the eternal war between Light and Dark.

Light Others protect mankind from Dark Others, who plague and torture humans.

Over 1000-years ago a truce was struck between Gesser, Lord of the Light, and Zavulon, General of Darkness. They agreed that no one could be forced to good or evil, people must choose freely for themselves. To uphold this truce, each side established underground forces; the soldiers of the Light would be called Night Watch, making sure Dark Others obeyed the truce. And the soldiers of Darkness would be called Day Watch, to do the same.

Ancient prophecy foretells that one day the Great One will arrive who can end the threat of an apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark Others. That day has come, and the Great One, once he or she is identified, must choose whether to destroy the light within or battle the surrounding darkness. This choice will reveal mankind's destiny.

1992:
Anton Gordesky, a broken-hearted man, desperate to win back his fiancée, seeks out the black magic services of a witch. This Dark Other, about to use her magic for evil, is arrested by the Night Watch moments before for completing her spell. The cataclysmic event awakens Anton to discover that he is an Other. Now he must choose whether to become a protector of light or warrior of darkness.

Today:
Somewhere on the streets of Moscow the "Great One" wanders, oblivious to his or her powers. Anton, along with his Night Watch team, race to find and protect the Great One from Zavulon and his Day Watch vampires who seek to plunge the world into darkness. Whoever reaches the Great One first will hold the balance of power in their hands and control the fate of humanity.

NIGHT WATCH (NOCHNOI DOZOR) is the first installment of a trilogy based on the best-selling Russian sci-fi novels of Sergei Lukyanenko (which also includes Day Watch and Dusk Watch). This visionary horror fantasy film features a dazzling mix of mind-blowing effects, adrenaline-fuelled action and suspenseful terror.

This must be an awesome film. The description alone got my blood pumping. Comeon Fox Searchlight, lets get this picture to the screen

Serenity

The DVD version of one of my favorite movies of the year "Serenity" is coming out tomorrow. I know this was not a big hit in theatres but here is your chance to see an amazing film that deserved to suceed. The ending action sequence is amazing and the whole film has effects that a year or two ago would have been called mindblowing (i dont think it is possible for any movie, no matter how good its cgi to have effects that are good enough to be called mindblowing anymore) The characters really drive the plot and the universe that they exist in is kind of like the Star Wars Universe (i.e.- You want to be part of it!) I think what really made the film great though is just like Harry Potter 4, the film, it has a good sprinkling of humor mixed in with the rest of it that keeps it fun.

KING KONG

December 13th is a major day in moviemaking and general culture.
The first reason for this is today is American Edit Resistance day. American Edit was a mashup album of Green Days "American Idiot" that got banned a meer 10 days after its release. BoingBoing has a much better article on it than I could write, so I will just link to that. At the bottom of the article is the link to the download site. The downloads stop at midnite, so hurry up!
BoingBoing Article

The second reason is tomorrow is the KING KONG REALEASE. Of course some people will see it tonite at the midnite premiere, but for most of us it is tomorrow that is the premiere. The reviews I have read have all been postive and the IMDB page was glowing with excellent remarks. Peter Jackson appears to have worked another miracle and for that I have to give him mad props! If you havent seen the trailer yet go here
If you desire a King Kong review fix, check out The IMDB PAGE/
Other than that, less than 24 hours to go before Kong is UNLEASHED! HAPPY WAITING!!

A Current Affair

A discussion with a friend today about quality journalism lead to a discussion about everyones favorite journalism show, A CURRENT AFFAIR! I googled the show to find out more about it, and this amazing article showed up about the shows host, Tim Green. I loved the article so much for its entertainment value that I figured it was worth sharing.

SNAKES ON A PLANE

Okay this article made my day. It needs no explanation.
SNAKES ON A PLANE ALREADY A HIT?

ARE MOVIES DEAD?

I just read a slightly out of date article from the LATIMES. The writer of the article insists that movies (at least in theatres) are dead. Before I disagree, you gotta read the article first.
The ARTICLE
Heres my two cents on the issues: Yes, this year has not been profitable for Hollywood. Yes, there is also a bumper crop of movies eligible for Razzberrys. I think that the correllation between the two is strong, and thus, Hollywood should not be shouting doomsday yet. Will theatres always be as popular as they were entering the 21st century? HECK NO! As more and more technologys are introduced that allow you to consume media wherever you want, whenever you want theatre use will continue to decline. The demand for movies and entertainment is only going to increase. But increasingly people are going to demand specialized content. The age of america having a sweetheart actor is gone. The future is content about what I specifically want, not necessarily a wide audience. So I guess my oppinion is the same as the writer of the article but in a diffrent way. I dont think that Hollywood is dead by a long shot but Hollywood is going to have to adapt.

BIKING MOVIES

After a friend rolled her car last night(she and everyone else involved are okay!!!) I remembered several great movies filled with bike crashes!
This first one features tons of bad BMX crashes. Every time you think they can't get any worse, they DO! Its a pretty kicking rad film.
BMX CRASHES

The next movie doesnt have any crashes but features a race between bike messengers through NYC. They cut through cars, weave through pedestrians, hold on to cars to get speed boosts. Once you see this movie you will think that being a bike messenger is cool. Trust me!
ITS TIME TO DUEL!!!

THE WARRIORS

The recent release of the videogame "The Warriors" has turned my attention to the original movie which it is based upon. I must say the movie it is based upon looks mighty sweet. According to IMDB here is the plot....
"New York City. Home to over 7,000,000 people. They work and play by day. But when night comes, the street gangs take over the five boroughs, known simply as "The Armies of the Night"- One hundred thousand sworn rivals such as: The Furies, The Boppers, The Rogues, The High-Hats, The Lizzies, The Turnbull A.C.'s, and The Gramercy Riffs, just to name a few. But only one gang is perhaps the most toughest: The Warriors. Based from the outskirts of Coney Island and led by Swan (Michael Beck), they head up towards Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx for a special meeting/truce by Cyrus, the "Lord Byron of the City". It is then that a gang member shoots and kills Cyrus and falsely accuse The Warriors for it. Now the boys from Coney are on the run. Between them and safety stands over 20,000 NYPD cops and the enemies. With only one chance at escape and only one night to do it, The Warriors will do anything possible, if necessary, to get back home. Even if it means picking up a broad along the way. Tonight they are all out for THE WARRIORS"
Now if that doesnt sound like a sweet movie, I do not know what will. I have not seen this film yet but there is also news of a remake thats being done by MTV films for release in 2006. The scipt is set in LA instead of NYC and many of the major characters from the original film will not be featured in it. Anyway for more information on this movie check out these two sites

Bourne Ultimatum Script Summary

The same LatinoReview that was linked to before with the sneak peak at the script of Pirates of the Caribean 3, now has a sneek peak at the Bourne Ultimatum script. They dont give the script a great review, but also remind folks that this script is at least 20 drafts away from the final version. Warning though, just like the POTC3 script review, the whole review is full of spoilers. A non spoiler version of the story could be summarized as Bourne is on the run again, and this time every question left unanswered will be answered in this final Bourne movie.

HARRY POTTER DIES?

Dark Horizons has an article about how J.K Rowling has recently done an interview saying that Harry Potter 7 is the absolute final book. There is no more possibility of it ever being continued pass book 7. She also said people will have to wait and see if Harry lives to reach adulthood. J.K ROWLING ROCKS THE BOAT PEOPLE! I dont really want to even think about how she could kill off another major character. First off, I dont even think that unless Voldemort wins, Harry could die in the storyline. If their lives are entertwined so that one has to kill the other, then either Voldemort wins, Harry dies or Harry wins, Voldemort dies. It would be a crushing finish to a great seriesif Harry dies, so if Harry does die, it better be pretty well justified by the story. Personally I just think that J.K. is playing a card to distract and worry people. In all likelihood, Harry will not die. But I could be eating those words in a couple years when the books come out, so we will see!

Funniest Boondocks Ever

Boondocks is in my local paper (Minneapolis Star Tribune) and todays Boondocks was so great that I just had to share. The best part about this is I am sure this situation is going to happen for many people. I dont want to say anymore and spoil it
Read Todays Boondocks

Fantastic Four 2

The same storyline from the first Fantastic Four is being continued in Fantastic Four 2 (except without Dr. Doom) The movie itself was HORRIBLY recieved as a boring effect driven drivel, but it got 350 million box office and I am assuming that its dvd release is going to be profitable. So from the studios perspective, why change a winner? I can give you a reason. I love Fantastic Four the comic book and after reading all the negative reviews I decided not to go because I did not fell like being dissapointed strongly by the film. The only reason I would go to the second was if the coolest villain Dr. Doom was still in it. Dr. Doom has two things that make him the coolest villain. One, the name is the awesome, two, the costume is awesome. He is the reason why I was especially excited about Fantastic Four 1 and without him, its just an extra empty shell. Anyway on the plus side, Syriana and The Chronicles of Narnia--- This Friday

X- MEN 3

USATODAY has a few pictures from X-MEN 3 on their site today. The only photo of any real note is the first picture which is of "The Beast" He does not look like anything fromt he comic, he looks alot older and more grizzled than he does in the comics. Maybe its just me, but from this one picture I get a kind of Animatronics/Fantasy film feel from it. Like Jim Henderson somehow got a hold of the rights to produce it.
See The Pics Here!
EDIT- A teaser trailer has also been realeased. This just "dropped" today so check it out!

The Italian Job

The Brazilian Job?
I found out today that they are making a sequel to one of the best movies about stealing stuff, "The Italian Job". The sequels working title is "The Brazilian Job". Suitably enough, the film is set in Rio de Janeiro and stars all of the same people from the original. According to IMDB, Mos Def is in this one. I do not remember him being in the first one, but I am excited to see him in the second film. He was funny in HHGTG and he is one of my favorite rappers, so I am looking forward to seeing this even more.
link IMDB LINK
EDIT-It appears that Mos Def was in fact in "The Italian Job" He played the character of Left Ear, the guy who lost his hearing in an accident involving a toilet and an m-80. Thanks to Matt for the correction
